Justin offers Part-Time General Counsel services to start-up and small-to-medium sized businesses. He works to become part of the upper management team, advising on contracts and drafting operational manuals or handbooks, including codes of conduct. Justin uses his pre-law experience as a programmer/analyst to help systematically catalogue and control growing numbers of contracts signed with clients or other third-parties and to help management see both the tree and the forest with his ability to organize any complex set of data in an efficient and meaningful manner.
Justin draws from his extensive experience with Judo Ontario as the Chair of its Legal Committee in addition to his experience as General Counsel of a Bay Street investment industry firm. He is also familiar with Ontario Securities Commission proceedings through the latter. Justin brings to the table his experience at Ernst & Young where he led a team on a special project that was responsible for researching corporate actions. All of these experiences give his legal advice a unique perspective when considering whatever consequences may be implicated in any management decision.
Justin’s Part-Time General Counsel services add value to management, beyond just being an advisor. He plays an active role in ensuring that the legal perspective is always considered in all decisions, bringing a necessary dose of realism to the planning of big moves. He brings the hard questions to the table but also helps to offer solutions and work-through options and alternatives that focus on truly understanding the imminent risks before taking them on and on planning for the consequences of such risks. His litigation experience shines in this capacity.
He also helps to reduce expenditure on external legal counsel by fielding most, if not all, of the general legal questions that management may have. And should the legal question require expertise in another area, Justin will be able to narrow the question so that the external counsel’s legal expertise is most efficiently used. Justin also has an extensive legal network of lawyers from all areas of practice that he can use to also possibly answer the question directly himself (without having to pay for external counsel).
